As of May 1, 2010, Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 and the Implementing Regulation (EC) No 987/2009 came into force.
It is crucial to note that the mentioned matters do not harmonize the various national systems, but rather coordinate them.
In other words, each state can still independently determine who is insured according to its legal provisions.
However, the European Union provisions establish rules for determining which national legal system applies in cases with a foreign connection.
